Julius included an emerging vision for nature and strategy for developing a Site-specific Afforestation Plan for greater biodiversity and tree cover at the Slieve Aughty Center, with added information regarding the possibility for a regional or neighbourhood approach if neighbouring farmers and landowners, including Coillte, could join together on creating a regional vision for the restoration of Tree Cover to the area.

Slieve Aughty Center Nature Restoration and Afforestation Project 2024/25

The Slieve Aughty Nature Restoration and Afforestation project, led by CELT in a strategic partnership with the Slieve Aughty Centre, with thanks to funding from the Community Foundation Ireland, aims to build on existing ecological and biodiversity surveys of the area, initiate a new educational and nature restoration project at the Slieve Aughty Centre, and working with professional Forester and other specialist experts through the restoration of critical wetlands, biodiversity, hedgerows, agroforestry at the Slieve Aughty Centre, to create an exemplar model for nature restoration and bioregional educational learning centres for Ireland.

The aim is to expand CELT’s role as the educational partner and build on and enhance existing educational programs, which include foraging workshops, woodland crafts, and school tours. The partnership will offer new opportunities to extend its programme for local schools and community groups, expanding CELT’s educational outreach while positioning the Slieve Aughty Centre as a key regional outdoor nature education facility and demonstration project for agroforestry and biodiversity conservation”
