“Reconnecting ancient woodlands along the Abhain Dá Lioilíoch river – an element of the Great Forest of Aughty”

CELT were delighted to host an event for Biodiversity Week on the 26 May 2024, with the kind support of the Irish Environmental Network supporting the ongoing work of bringing attendtion to the need for the care and protection of the few precious remnants existing of the once Great Forest of Aughty, which we can find at the Coillte managed Chevy Chase woodlands Site in Co. Galway

The event took place in partnership with our local community groups and was led by Bob Wilson, Marta and Gabrielle from Abhainn Dha Loiloicht, and Brian Walsh of The Woodland League.

This Biodviersity Day celebration consisted of an enjoyable guided walk through the ancient oak woodland remnants, within this Coillte Site, focusing on biodiversity conservation, efforts on the restoration of the local ecosystem by Coillte and others, and on the potential for a Local Landscape Partnership approach, on the future advocacy and collaboration necessary to protect this rare and precious site for the future generations of all species.

Impact: Raised awareness of commuity engagement in sustainable forest management and resoring our biodiversity.
