About The Event

This one day Meitheal will give us the opportunity to share our sustainable living and permaculture skills and knowledge, and learn the basic steps and the nuts and bolts of how to design, build and manage our own back garden outdoor composting toilet, which are waste-free toilets that rely on the biological process of composting to recycle toilet material, and produce humanure.

Compost toilets can simply consist of a five-gallon bucket covered by a hinged box. Toilet instructions are simple. From this point, composting human waste (humanure) is safe and easy. However, there are a variety of ways to make a humanure toilet, over the day we aim to explore this together and build 2 outdoor structures for our community compost toilets. The humanure process involves a compost toilet, a compost bin and cover material.

By exploring the steps together on how to make, use, and manage compost toilets, we will show how easy it is for everyone to set up a compost loo in their home, garden, allotment, forest school sites or community areas.

Recycling our humanure, food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients, reducing water wastage and mitigating the impact of droughts.

Although most of the world's humanure is currently quickly flushed down a drain, or discarded into the environment as a pollutant, as permaculturists, we know it instead as a rich natural resource that can be converted, through composting, into lush vegetative growth, and used to feed humanity.
