Policy Aims
We promote sustainable living with emphasis on sustainable eco-systems, nature conservation, thinking globally and acting locally – also ‘Promoting Education through Conservation’.Through our training courses we encourage people to build and make tools, utensils, sports equipment using local natural and recycled materials and hand tools. They will learn skills that they can then use at home. Also, through our guided walks, people will learn about nature conservation and sustainable management of eco-systems.
Responsible Tourism Policy
We promote sustainable tourism – visitors are encouraged to travel by train, bus, car-share and learn traditional / ecological skills from local tutors / guides, staying in local eco-friendly accommodation (we also encourage accommodation providers to adopt eco-friendly practices by giving priority of bookings to those giving the best eco-friendly practices including use of energy-efficient appliances, eco-friendly cleaning products, recycling, composting, fair-trade products). We offer a choice of holidays that include skills training and guided walks, employing local tutors and guides and focussing on local ecology, geology, history and culture. Holiday information provided includes details of ferry, train, bus schedules. We also ask visitors to let us know if they would be willing to share the cost of local travel with other visitors so that we can hire a minibus or people carrier to move them around locally. The theme of all our workshops is sustainability, with an emphasis on sustainable eco-systems – local natural or recycled materials are used to create buildings, tools, utensils or sports equipment. Timber is sourced from local sustainably managed woodlands. We promote local businesses and encourage visitors to use local restaurants, shops, cinema, pubs, entertainment so that their spending is going into the local community. Guided walks include explanation of how we input to the County Biodiversity Plan and County Heritage Plan to help sustainably manage our local heritage (CELT are represented on the County Biodiversity Group, the County Heritage Forum and the County Community Forum).Also we use recycled stationery and locally sourced equipment in our office.CELT Eco Holidays make a difference by encouraging and promoting sustainable living and nature conservation both locally and globally. They add a new dimension to eco-tourism by combining hands-on learning experience with training in ecology provided by knowledgeable local guides. The whole experience is beneficial to both the visitor and the local community and environment.
Economic Responsibility
We use local tutors and guides, local and recycled materials and especially the economic benefits of sustainable eco-system management, e.g. valuable hardwood timber for furniture selectively chosen as part of management of continuous-cover native / mixed woodlands, scrap metal used to create new implements. Tools, equipment and organic food are all locally sourced.All proceeds from our events and eco-holidays are put back into our education, training and awareness programmes.We promote local businesses and encourage visitors to use local restaurants, pubs, shops, cinema, etc, so that money is spent within the community.
Environmental Responsibility
We encourage conservation of the wider landscape through the educational content of our guided walks, ecology training and awareness raising activities – local eco-systems such as rivers, woodlands, wetlands, meadows, bogs all being integral parts of our rich natural heritage. Management of these eco-systems should allow for conservation of the whole landscape. Human development should have minimum impact on the surrounding landscape, thereby ensuring healthy eco-systems with clean air, water, soil. Energy conservation is promoted – we use human-powered tools wherever possible. Also we bring water to the workshop site using a ram-pump which uses only the pressure of the water itself created by gravity. Participants are told to use the water sparingly so that the tank does not empty.Waste is collected at specific places where it is sorted into different bins for recycling. All organic waste is composted. We give priority to local accommodation providers who adopt eco-friendly practices by giving priority of bookings to those giving the best eco-friendly practices including use of energy-efficient appliances, eco-friendly cleaning products, recycling, composting, fair-trade products).
Social Responsibility
By inviting wider community involvement in our activities, we provide a service to the local community and offer opportunities for further involvement through arts, drama, music, etc. We provide regular input to local fairs and shows with skills demonstrations and displays. We support other local charities by giving them opportunity to take part in our events. We give discount rates to students, unemployed or otherwise unwaged people and we encourage physically and mentally challenged people to take part in our events and holidays.
Our events and eco-holidays attract visitors which are much welcomed in this neglected and disadvantaged region, providing spin-off employment in accommodation, catering and entertainment sectors.
