SUMMER IN THE WOODS

Bealkelly Wood, Tuamgraney, County Clare (please note: this is a privately owned woodland not open to visitors outside specific events, except on business).

CELT's Big Woodland /Countryside Skills Training Event
CELT presents, in association with Muintir na Coille (Coppice and Allied Trades Association), choice of 15 courses in environmental and ecological trades for all levels. Trainees already having basic skills are welcome to develop their skills further with the guidance of our highly qualified tutors. Courses are open to all over 14 years and 'Woodcrafts' course open to 8 - 14 yr old children of CELT tutors and course participants only.

PROPOSED COURSES (Scroll down using arrow -bottom right - for more courses)
Some courses are only available Saturday and Sunday.

Footwear making (2 or 3 day course)
Introduction to basic footwear design, pattern-making, cutting, stitching, etc. Making a pair. Materials cost , cloth / canvas or similar = 10 to 40 euros, leather = 50 euros for your own pair, small selection of hand tools available for purchase.

Dry Stone & Lime Mortar Walling(Sat + Sun only)
Traditional construction techniques for walls and buildings - also garden features (retaining walls, raised beds, seats, steps) plus an introduction to the use of lime mortar which allows a building to 'breathe' letting out water-vapour but preventing rain from getting in. Steel-toe-cap boots are recommended. Note option of Lime work on Monday - See Lime / Hemp plastering course for details.

Herb-lore(2 days + 3rd day recommended {on request})
Plant Magic- Exploration of our native wild and garden plants includes edible and medicinal uses, folklore, gardening tips, herb walk, seasonal recipes, herbal tincture and ointment making. Small materials charge.

Greenwood Furniture(2 days + 3rd day if required)
Selection of different types of native green hardwoods and using them to make interesting furniture using the natural shapes and grain of the wood. Materials charge 20 euro.

Wood Carving(2 days + 3rd day if required)
For beginners, carve an oak leaf in relief. Learn to handle tools and sharpening techniques as well as understanding the structure of wood. (Wood blank provided). For those with some carving experience, carve a barn owl in relief (blank provided) - or bring your own project (please contact tutor 087-9933157 to discuss). Materials cost 10 euro.

Ti-pi making(2 days + 3rd day recommended {on request})
Make a 9ft 'children's lodge' - cutting and stitching of canvas plus construction info. Have the experience of making one collectively or 'make your own' -Materials charge 100 euros (if taking away your own ti-pi)

Bushcraft(2 days + 3rd day recommended {on request})
An introduction to the fundamental principles of survival in the wilderness. This course identifies and analyses key issues in survival both in unexpected emergency situations and in planned expeditions. A mix of theory and its practical application.

Blacksmithing (2-day course Sat + Sun)
Use of small portable forge to make hand tools and decorative wrought ironwork - 10 euro materials charge payable with course fee.

Basket Weaving (3rd day available on request)
Traditional willow basketry skills for many uses and the varieties of willow available - Materials charge 10 euro.

Yurt-wheel construction (3-day course)
Make your own yurt-wheel with steam-bent Ash and Hazel rods. This is the trickiest part of building a yurt. Materials cost 40 euros.

Natural Building (2 days - 3rd day on request)
Construction of an eco-friendly building using cob and cordwood.

Stone Carving / Cutting (Sat + Sun only)
Introduction to stone carving and cutting techniques and clay sculpture.

Silversmithing (3rd day available on request)
An introduction to silver jewelry making. Design and make your own jewelry pieces starting with a ring or pendant. If you have a semi-precious stone that you would like to incorporate in jewelry, bring it along. Also bring protective apron and stool / chair if you can. Small materials charge.

Hemp-Lime Plastering/ Daubing (2 or 3 days)
In this 2 day course, we will be applying a hemp and lime plaster to the hazel wattle frame of the thatched round house, and covering this rough coat with a traditional lime plaster. Both these plasters can be used seperatly and in a variety of ways, but are particularly suitable for renovating stone cottages, providing an insulated and breathable finish. Please wear clothes you are happy to throw away and bring waterproof gloves. There will be a discussion of compatible lime based paints.
Optional 3rd day (Monday) : to include
Fine nhl only plasters and ready mix plasters to flat surface, floating
Demonstration of pointing + mix
Demonstration of stone building +mortar mix ( propose to use building you started, with a view to making that building available for courses in the future)

Felt-making (2 days + 3rd day if required)
Learn to make brightly coloured felt mats, hats and bags from sheeps' fleece. Please bring wellies, waterproof leggings, a towel and a cushion. Materials charge of E15

For youngsters (8 - 14 yrs) : Woodcrafts (2 or 3 days as required) (Children of tutors and course participants only)
Providing children with a basic skills-base for design and construction of simple 'rustic' furniture, musical instruments, shelter building and camping skills. Instruction in use of hammer and nails, rope-making and weaving techniques to encourage children to continue making things at home. The tutor will supervise use of hammers and saw - other sharp tools (e.g. knife, axe) will be used by the tutor only.
Course tutor : Mark Wilson (Many years experience as fully registered tutor with Irish National Teachers Organisation / Heritage Council 'Heritage in Schools' project).

COURSE FEES : 130 Euros for 2 days / 190 for 3 days (in advance) - 75 euros per day if paid on arrival
Woodcrafts (8 - 14 yrs) 2 days 90 euro, 3 days 130 euros
Annual MEMBERSHIP is a requirement - 15 euro.
Concessions available for students / unwaged on request only.

Courses run 10.30am - 5.30pm.
Please do arrive early on the Saturday to Register etc. at the gate. Its a further 10 minute walk down to the workshops.

Canteen (Good wholesome food available).
Also a Teahouse & Camping for participants only in the designated area. Leave only your footprints.

Strong boots / Wellingtons, Raingear, Penknife are recommended.
